There are some common mistakes beginner photographers make when shooting sports, and it's not overly easy for many professionals to do either, but don't despair. There are several tips that might help you get better sports action shots in the future.

The first thing you need to realize is: Not all of your pictures will turn out just right. I was recently at my son's high school football game, and took over 400 pictures before the third quarter was finished. Of those 400 though, only about 40 were excellent, and roughly 75-100 were good enough to keep.

Thankfully that is one of the beauties of using digital cameras: You don't have to waste expensive film while you're learning. Instead, when you come across any pictures that didn't turn out well, you can simply delete them to make room for new ones.

With that said, let's get in to some useful tips.

Because sports photography is quite fast paced, you'll need to start with a lot of light. If you're trying to take pictures of an indoor basketball or volleyball game, you may have problems getting good pictures. If you have a very strong flash for your camera, that will help quite a bit. Many point and shoot digital cameras don't have strong enough flash for this, especially when parents tend to try taking the pictures from the stands which are a bit too far away from all the action.

So try getting closer. See if you're able to stand at the edge of the court, or maybe right behind the basket if you're at a basketball game. Then set your camera on sports mode - this will look like a little running man icon on a control dial of your camera - and make sure your flash is turned on. These settings will help your camera give you the best settings it can in your currently lighting conditions, and if all goes well you'll get some great action shots in the end.

If you're taking action shots outside, things are much easier... particularly if there's bright sunlight. The more light you have available when taking your pictures, the better you'll be able to stop the action in your pictures.

Again put your camera into sports mode, and again try to get as close to the action as you can. Position yourself behind the goal posts at a soccer or football game, or close to one of the sides if that's the best you can do. Just pick one spot and wait for the play to come your way. There will be times where all the action is too far away from you, but wait a little while and it usually comes close to every part of the playing field.

Even if you have bright sunlight to shoot in, you can still use your camera's flash too. Keep in mind that it might not be strong enough to reach too far, and if that's the case it won't do you much good. If however, you get to take a picture of a tackle taking place 5 feet in front of you, the flash will usually be able to light the scene at that distance.

If you need to be further away than your flash allows, here are 2 things you can try...First, increase the ISO setting (but not so much as to produce to much noise), or second, move to a significantly brighter location.

4) Watch Your Background

If there are distracting features, change your settings to blur the background (see the Techniques page). The best photography pose in the world won't look right with a distracting background. And finally...

5) Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

If there are mirrors or reflective surfaces in the background and you can't find a different location, only take the picture in such a way that the flash is not perpendicularto the surface, but at an angle (unless you want a nice photo of your flash).

6) The Sun

Avoid photographing in direct sunlight, or in mixed light and shade, especially faces. Optimal lighting results from a slightly overcast sky.

That takes an average of 8.75% of their fee right off the top of the sales amount. In some cases, in many areas of the country, California included, wedding photographers are required to pay sales tax even if they are charging a flat fee for their service. Many photographers think that sales tax doesn't apply to "photography services", like wedding photography or event photography where they get paid a flat amount. In most cases they are wrong and can run into trouble with the government if they do not comply.

I personally know of a case where a San Diego event photographer did many of her events for a flat fee and thought she didn't have to pay sales tax. When she was audited, she had to pay sales tax for a considerable amount of her previous events, which nearly put her out of business. Think about that when you are considering a photographers price, as much as 40% in some cases could be being paid in taxes! So if you are paying someone $1000 fee, as much as $400 of it could be going to the government.

I remember eating my first Texas burger at Becks Prime. I had my first Texas style Indian food at Kirans (formerly Bombay Palace) and Chinese food from P.F Changs. It was nice eating out almost every night. Soon to follow would be numerous trips to Pappasitas, Mexican Restaurant famous for its sizzling fajita plates for two! It was so popular and such a hit with our family that we became weekly customers of this great Tex Mex eatery.
